Journal Entry #1

I felt more connected to "Mother Tongue" than "Private and Public Language" because I had more similar experiences of when my mother's limited English caused her to feel like she was not treated fairly with English-speakers. For example, I had a recent experience in where my mother tried to return a laptop at best buy but the person at the return center would try not to understand my mother’s limited English and would just repeat in a robotic tone that she could not help her. So, she had to call for me to translate for her, where I asked to speak with the manager and the process was handled smoothly afterward. I would usually translate and help my mother whenever she was forced to speak with someone in English.
In “Mother Tongue’s” the mother was forced into many problems because of her inability to speak English in a manner that was spoken by others. Therefore, the mother was forced to use her literate daughter who helps her get set up a meeting with the stock broker or even receive basic valuable information such as a CAT scan for any brain tumors. As the broker’s manager met up with the two girls, but if the mother asked to meet with the manager, I highly doubt any meeting would have occurred. Also, when the daughter spoke to the doctors, they immediately apologized and said they would bring the CAT scan as soon as possible, but when it was just the mother, they didn’t even apologize. Therefore, by becoming more literate it shows how much different society looks at you and treat you, making it harder for illiterate people and different language speakers to receive the respect they deserve as any other human being.
