The war on drugs
The war on drugs is a very controversial topic discussed frequently by the public and even by public officials. The war on drugs is where the government tries to police the use of illegal drugs. This question is brought up most of the time because marijuana is an illegal drug in most states in the U.S. Marijuana is a drug that is smoked or consumed as a psychoactive (mind-altering) drug. Drugs are always put down by the government and only advocates the negatives and not the positives of drugs could if used properly. The government is cutting off the problem with the usage of drugs than trying to solve it. For example, they can allow marijuana to be used for recreational purposes and place high taxes on it to gain money as well as dissuade users. This method is already used by several states such as Alaska, Arizona and other states as well. The war on drugs has many viewpoints by both the people and the government, but currently the war on drugs is seen as a losing and useless war.
The war on drugs needs to stop. The war on drugs started in June 1971 by U.S president Richard Nixon as he urged to stop drug abuse by increasing funding for programs to control and treat consumers of such drugs. Programs that were passed by the U.S congress was the Anti-drug act of 1986 which “established a series of “mandatory minimum” prison sentences for various drug offenses” and started the many imprisonment of drug users. These programs targeted many people from poor background especially the African Americans because many of them possessed cocaine. At first it was well-supported by the public as the media made the public more afraid of drugs and campaigns such as “Just Say No” campaign, which was a privately funded effort to educate schoolchildren on the dangers of drug use” (EB Editors). Later, people began to realize the disparity of a larger number of African Americans sent to prison than any other race. Also, currently the public is disfavoring the war on drugs which led to reforms in the use of marijuana in many states. The war on drugs was an unnecessary plan enacted in the past and we should change out situation that better suits the need of everyone in America.
The war on drugs is a long struggle between the government and the people. The war has many viewpoints and it’s view continually changes as time goes on and how people react and feel about the war on drugs plays a huge factor in that. Also, there would be many logical viewpoints if the war on drugs was effective or if it was just a waste of money. This paper will conclude on the many viewpoints on the war of drugs and if the war on drugs should be continued or stopped.
